LOHO Breaks Ground

On Monday, April 16, over 60 people gathered to watch the ground-breaking of The Hamlet on Lopez Island, a living and care facility for senior citizens created by Lopez Housing Options (LOHO).

The development is a combination of an adult family home with 24-hour supervised care, 14 cottages (for both independent and semi-independent living), and a common building, where Hamlet seniors can socialize. Occupancy is set at approximately 30 people.

Representatives from USDA Rural Development -- John DeVaney, State Director of the USDA Rural Development, Sandra Boughton, Director Community Programs, Agnieska Kiska, State Architect, and Darla O'Connor, Community Program Specialist -- were also on-site to present LOHO with a 40-year, 4.125 percent interest loan of $1 million for the adult family home. LOHO hopes to have the adult home built by the end of 2007. The total cost of the project is in the $4 million range.

There are still openings for both the market-priced and affordably priced cottages. LOHO will not be taking applications for the adult family home until it is about to open.

"The passion and perseverance of the LOHO board and key advisors is the reason we can celebrate the ground-breaking of the first Seniors Hamlet building. This day belongs to those who worked so hard to make it happen and to the USDA Rural Development officials with us today who believed in the value of our innovative project," said Rip Van Camp, LOHO chair.

Brochures about The Hamlet are available at the Lopez Library, Senior Center, and LOHO office in back of the Fishbay Building across from the Post Office. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call (360) 468-2620 or visit www.loho.org.
